PA Schools Under Scrutiny: Hickton’s Hotline Hunts Fraud

PITTSBURGH, PA – As kids head back to classrooms, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania is sending a stark message: waste, fraud, and corruption in the school system won’t be tolerated. U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton today doubled down on a little-known resource – a dedicated hotline – designed to field tips from the public regarding the misuse of taxpayer dollars earmarked for education.

The School Corruption Hotline, 412-894-7515, isn’t some bureaucratic maze. It rings directly in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, giving concerned citizens a direct line to federal investigators. Hickton’s office is actively soliciting information on a wide range of potential offenses, from simple theft and spending irregularities to complex schemes involving rigged contracts and outright bribery.

“The advent of a new school year provides the opportunity to remind citizens that they are a vital resource in helping us identify fraud and illegal activity within the school system,” Hickton stated. He specifically urged the public to report “misuse of district education funds, theft, spending irregularities, corruption in the contract and bidding process, and bribery, kickbacks or other forms of collusion with outside vendors.” This isn’t a fishing expedition; it’s a direct call for evidence.

Hickton emphasized the importance of detail. Vague accusations get you nowhere. Investigators need specifics – names, dates, amounts, and any supporting documentation – to effectively pursue leads. The FBI, IRS – Criminal Investigation, and the Department of Education – Office of Inspector General are all potential investigating agencies, depending on the nature of the allegations. The more information provided, the better the chances of a successful investigation.

Launched in November 2011, the hotline has already proven its worth. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, dozens of calls have come in, triggering “several open and ongoing investigations.” While details of those cases remain tightly guarded, the message is clear: someone is listening, and someone is acting on the information received.

The Western District of Pennsylvania covers a sprawling 25 counties, including the heavily populated Allegheny, Erie, and Johnstown areas. That includes Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington, and Westmoreland in the Greater Pittsburgh area; Crawford, Elk, Erie, Forest, McKean, Venango and Warren in the Erie area; and Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Clearfield and Somerset in the Johnstown area. Hickton’s office is making it abundantly clear that accountability extends across the entire region.
