A 29-year-old Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to 120 months in prison for online enticement of a minor, according to the Department of Justice.
James Julius Caton, of Pennsylvania, was sentenced on March 22, 2024, after pleading guilty to the charge on February 22, 2024. Caton was investigated by the Cary Police Department after a mother found sexual text messages between Caton and her 13-year-old child.
According to court documents, Caton first reached out to the child on Omegle, a free online chat service, and later moved the conversation to Snapchat and Instagram. The two then exchanged text messages, in which Caton encouraged the child to send pictures of their genitals and discussed meeting to engage in sexual activities.
Caton was arrested in Pennsylvania and his digital devices were analyzed, revealing unrelated images and videos of child pornography on his cellular device. The Cary Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Charity Wilson prosecuting the case.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet.
U.S. District Judge Terrence W. Boyle presided over the sentencing. The case was brought to justice thanks to the quick action of the mother, who discovered the text messages and reported them to the authorities. Caton’s sentence serves as a reminder that online predators will be held accountable for their crimes.
The case highlights the importance of online safety and the need for parents and guardians to monitor their children’s online activity. It also underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protecting children from exploitation and abuse.
