PHILADELPHIA – Another day, another brazen robbery hitting the streets of Philadelphia. Khyrie Brown, 25, learned the hard way that pointing a gun at a store clerk doesn’t pay, receiving a 36-month federal prison sentence today for his role in the November 2023 stick-up of a North Philadelphia dollar store. U.S. District Judge Gerald J. Pappert also tacked on three years of supervised release and ordered Brown to fully reimburse the store for its losses.
The feds hit Brown with an indictment in July 2024, charging him with robbery which interferes with interstate commerce – a Hobbs Act violation. He pleaded guilty in March of this year, effectively admitting his guilt in a crime that preyed on a local business and terrified a store employee. Assistant United States Attorney Thomas M. Zaleski drove the prosecution, securing a conviction that sends a message: armed robbery won’t be tolerated.
According to court documents and Brown’s own admissions, the November 6th robbery unfolded with cold precision. Brown and three other men stormed into the dollar store on the 2800 block of Ridge Avenue around 6:30 p.m. One of the crew played the part of a customer, attempting to distract the clerk while another brandished what appeared to be a black handgun. The clerk was ordered to open the safe. It wasn’t a sophisticated operation, but it was dangerous.
Two of the robbers vaulted over the counter, creating chaos and seizing control of the immediate area. Brown, meanwhile, focused on the prize: a cash drawer from the safe. He grabbed it and hauled it out of the store, joining his accomplices as they bolted for a waiting getaway vehicle. The haul? Approximately $3,000 in coins and U.S. currency – hardly worth the risk of a lengthy prison term.
Philadelphia Police Department officers responded quickly to the scene, initiating a pursuit that led them to the area of 30th and Gordon streets. A K9 unit proved instrumental in locating Brown, who was found hiding in an abandoned property on the 2300 block of North 30th Street. The quick response and effective tracking brought a dangerous criminal to justice. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted in the investigation, highlighting the multi-agency effort to combat violent crime in the city.
Brown’s case is a stark reminder of the risks faced by small business owners and the dedication of law enforcement to protecting them. While three additional suspects were involved, the sentencing of Khyrie Brown marks a significant step in holding those responsible accountable for their actions. This investigation and prosecution were a joint effort by the Philadelphia Police Department, the ATF, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
