PHILADELPHIA, PA – A Philadelphia man is facing federal charges after allegedly attacking a United States Postal Service employee back in 2016. Kenneth Stalling, 34, was indicted today, bringing a delayed reckoning for the alleged assault.
According to the indictment announced by United States Attorney Zane David Memeger, Stalling is charged with one count of assaulting a federal employee – specifically, a USPS worker engaged in official duties. The incident reportedly occurred on or about October 19, 2016, within the city of Philadelphia. Details surrounding the specifics of the attack remain scarce at this time, but the feds are finally moving forward with prosecution.
The U.S. Attorney’s office is quick to point out that an indictment is merely an accusation. Stalling is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, if convicted on all counts, he’s looking at a stiff penalty: a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars. This isn’t some slap on the wrist; the feds are serious about protecting their employees.
Beyond imprisonment, Stalling could also be hit with a $250,000 fine. The potential financial hit doesn’t stop there. He also faces three years of supervised release after serving any potential prison time, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. The whole package adds up to a serious threat for the defendant.
The investigation into this case was a joint effort between the United States Postal Inspection Service – the law enforcement arm of the USPS – and the Philadelphia Police Department. They spent years building a case, and now it’s up to the courts to decide his fate. Assistant United States Attorney Thomas M. Zaleski has been assigned to prosecute the case.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves through the federal court system. Attacks on federal employees, particularly those providing essential services like mail delivery, will not be tolerated. We’ll be watching closely to see if justice is served in this long-delayed prosecution of Kenneth Stalling.
