CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — A 19-year-old Pittsburgh man has admitted to pushing heroin into West Virginia communities, pleading guilty today to federal drug charges. Nyzhon N. Bell, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, entered a guilty plea on one count of “Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin,” according to U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II.
The conviction lands Bell in the crosshairs of a potential 20-year prison sentence. He faces a maximum fine of $1,000,000. The actual time behind bars will hinge on the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, factoring in the severity of the crime and whether Bell has a prior criminal record.
Bell’s case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Traci M. Cook, who laid out the government’s case without need for trial after the defendant’s admission of guilt. The charges stem from an investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Greater Harrison County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force.
The task force, funded through the federal HIDTA program—designed to combat high-intensity drug trafficking—zeroed in on Bell as part of a broader crackdown on narcotics flooding rural counties in northern West Virginia. Authorities say heroin distribution routes from Pennsylvania are feeding a growing epidemic in the region.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the hearing, where Bell formally entered his plea. No sentencing date has been set, but federal prosecutors are expected to push for maximum accountability.
This conviction marks another blow in the federal government’s ongoing war against opioid trafficking in Appalachia. But with young defendants like Bell—just 19—coming off interstates with deadly cargo, law enforcement warns the pipeline remains dangerously active.
