PHILADELPHIA, PA – Two young men are facing a mountain of federal charges and potentially life in prison after a brutal crime spree targeting pizza delivery drivers across Philadelphia. David Torres-Medina (19) and Adiezel Perez-Rosario (19), both of Philadelphia, were indicted today, accused of turning late-night food runs into armed nightmares.
According to the indictment, Torres-Medina initiated the violence on September 20, 2016, robbing a Domino’s Pizza delivery person. But the brazen attacks didn’t stop there. The pair allegedly teamed up to target drivers from Domino’s Pizza, Fishtown Pizza, and Bravo Pizza on February 13, 21, and 22, 2017, respectively – each robbery carried out at gunpoint and knifepoint. The February 22nd incident involving the Bravo Pizza driver escalated further with a carjacking thrown into the mix.
Acting United States Attorney Louis D. Lappen announced the charges, which include four counts of robbery which interferes with interstate commerce, four counts of using and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence, carjacking, and, specifically against Torres-Medina, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The feds are coming down hard, and for good reason – these weren’t petty thefts; they were calculated, violent attacks on working people just trying to do their jobs.
If convicted on all counts, Torres-Medina is looking at a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, with a mandatory 82-year minimum. He also faces a staggering $2,500,000 fine, five years of supervised release, and a $1,000 special assessment. Perez-Rosario isn’t faring much better. A full conviction could land him life in prison, with an 82-year mandatory minimum, a $2,000,000 fine, five years supervised release, and an $800 special assessment. These aren’t slap-on-the-wrist sentences; the government is signaling they intend to make an example of these two.
The investigation was a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Philadelphia Police Department, and the Bensalem Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Eric A. Boden has been assigned to the case, and will be tasked with building a case strong enough to ensure justice is served. The streets of Philadelphia are a little safer tonight knowing these two are off them, and facing the consequences of their actions.
