June 11, 1922, Washington D.C. – A hapless Prohibition Enforcement Agent’s attempt to crack down on a fashionable resort was met with ridicule yesterday evening. Izzy, a waiter at the upscale eatery, had a field day as he outsmarted the agent, who had been undercover for 301 days.
The agent, who had been sipping on a series of drinks denoted on the menu as ‘fish,’ ‘beefsteak,’ and ‘claret,’ was caught red-handed by Izzy. ‘Is there anything else you would like?’ Izzy asked with a straight face, presenting his badge. The agent’s eyes lit up as he replied, ‘The pleasure of your company to the nearest police station.’
The waiter, anticipating the agent’s move, had already prepared a trap. He handed the agent a glass of colored water, which the agent gulped down without hesitation. But Izzy was ready. As the agent began to feel the effects of the ‘liquid,’ he started to choke and began to cough underneath his collar.
In a comical display of ineptitude, the agent began to pull out a long glass tube filled with brown, transparent liquid, accompanied by a rubber funnel. It was then that the waiter burst into laughter, exposing the agent’s true intentions. ‘Have you got the evidence?’ the desk sergeant asked as they arrived at the police station, to which Izzy replied, ‘I served him some colored water, and he drank it all up.’
The Prohibition Enforcement Agent, whose identity was not released, was left red-faced as his attempt to catch Izzy was foiled. The waiters’ quick thinking and cleverness saved the evening, and Izzy’s reputation as a cunning operator was solidified.
