Randy Alan Hamett, 62, of Choctaw, was indicted by a federal grand jury for a violent cross-state kidnapping that ended with a loaded pistol in hand and a woman fighting for her freedom. Hamett is charged with kidnapping, using and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, possessing a stolen revolver and ammunition, and violating a domestic violence protective order by having guns in his possession.
According to the indictment, Hamett abducted a woman from Oklahoma and transported her across state lines to Arkansas, where he continued to hold her against her will. During the ordeal, he displayed a pistol, heightening the terror and confirming the federal nature of the violent crime. Authorities say the firearm was not only used during the kidnapping but was also reported stolen—placing multiple federal statutes in play.
Hamett was already under a domestic violence protective order at the time of the alleged offenses, making his possession of any firearm a direct violation of federal law. Yet he not only possessed the weapon—he received and retained it knowing it had been stolen. Each charge paints a picture of a man operating outside all legal and moral boundaries.
If convicted, Hamett faces the maximum penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine on the kidnapping charge alone. On the firearm count related to a crime of violence, he faces a mandatory minimum of seven years and up to life. Additional charges each carry up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 fines, stacking potential punishment to a lifetime behind bars.
The case was jointly investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Broken Arrow Police Department, Siloam Springs Police Department, and Rogers State University Police. Coordination across multiple jurisdictions underscores the severity and complexity of the crime, which crossed both state and legal lines.
The indictment was announced by United States Attorney R. Trent Shores as part of the January 2018 Federal Grand Jury actions. Hamett remains in custody awaiting trial, where prosecutors will seek to prove each charge beyond a reasonable doubt. In the grim calculus of federal justice, his actions may now cost him the rest of his life.
