Rapid City’s Galen Iron Cloud, 30, Indicted in Meth Conspiracy

A 30-year-old Rapid City man is facing a federal prison sentence of up to 40 years after being indicted on charges tied to a multi-year methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy that stretched across tribal and state lines. Galen Cleveland Iron Cloud was named in a federal indictment unsealed in November 2021, accused of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of meth.

The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury on September 14, 2021, alleges that between August 3, 2018, and May 14, 2021, Iron Cloud knowingly conspired with others to move and sell large quantities of meth in both South Dakota and North Dakota. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 40 years behind bars, a $5,000,000 fine, mandatory lifetime supervised release, and a $100 payment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Iron Cloud appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 16, 2021, where he formally entered a plea of not guilty. He was immediately remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, with no bond set as the case proceeds toward trial. A trial date has been scheduled for June 21, 2022.

Law enforcement sources describe the investigation as a coordinated push by regional drug task forces aimed at disrupting supply chains feeding addiction in rural and tribal communities. The Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force led the probe, with critical support from the Oglala Sioux Tribe Police Department, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, Corson County Sheriff’s Office, Mobridge Police Department, Rapid City Police Department, and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook is prosecuting the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, emphasizing that the charges are part of a broader crackdown on organized drug networks operating in the Northern Plains. Federal prosecutors argue the volume and duration of the alleged conspiracy point to a well-established distribution operation.

The indictment stresses that the charge is an accusation, and Galen Cleveland Iron Cloud is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. If convicted, however, the consequences would be severe—marking another high-stakes battle in the federal fight against synthetic drug trafficking in Indian Country and beyond.
