A McComb man is headed to federal prison for violating federal gun laws. Norkeithus Malik Reed, 24, was sentenced to 27 months behind bars for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
The Brookhaven Police Department found Reed with the gun while responding to a disturbance at a local restaurant. He had previously been convicted of drug-related felony charges, making it a federal offense for him to possess a firearm.
Reed was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 4, 2023, and pled guilty on January 30, 2024, to the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi and Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives announced the sentence.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen prosecuting the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community-based initiatives and strategic enforcement priorities.
Reed’s sentence sends a clear message that violating federal gun laws will be met with serious consequences. As a convicted felon, he should have known better than to possess a firearm, putting himself and others at risk.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to crack down on gun crime and keep our communities safe.
The Project Safe Neighborhoods program is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community to reduce violent crime and gun violence. By working together, we can make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
In this case, the law enforcement agencies involved did their job, and Reed is now facing the consequences of his actions.
The sentence handed down to Reed serves as a reminder that the consequences of violating federal gun laws can be severe and long-lasting.
