REINBECK, IA – Austin David Hansen, 39, of Reinbeck, Iowa, is heading back to federal prison after receiving a 20-year sentence for running a large-scale methamphetamine operation. Hansen was sentenced June 23, 2025, by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids, marking a repeat offense for the career criminal.
Hansen pleaded guilty December 23, 2024, to one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance – a charge carrying significant weight given his prior federal drug trafficking conviction in November 2011. The current case revealed a sophisticated operation that began in December 2023, where Hansen leveraged connections made while already incarcerated to establish a new drug supply line from California.
Federal investigators uncovered that Hansen coordinated the shipment of at least 37 packages containing methamphetamine and marijuana to post office boxes in Reinbeck, Dike, and Waterloo, Iowa. The packages weren’t just small-time deliveries; authorities intercepted one shipment containing over 5,000 grams of methamphetamine. Hansen then oversaw the distribution of the drugs throughout the Northern District of Iowa, funneling the profits – exceeding $260,000 – back to his California source via mailed packages. This wasn’t a hobby; it was a business built on poison.
A May 22, 2024 raid on Hansen’s residence yielded a substantial haul: over 600 grams of methamphetamine, a firearm, more than $12,000 in cash, and documentation detailing the money transfers to California. The evidence painted a clear picture of a man deeply entrenched in the drug trade, profiting from the addiction and misery of others. The operation involved a multi-agency task force spanning multiple Iowa counties and reaching to California.
Hansen’s 240-month sentence is followed by a mandatory ten-year term of supervised release. With no parole in the federal system, Hansen will serve the entirety of his sentence. He’s currently in the custody of the United States Marshals awaiting transport to a designated federal prison. This conviction sends a clear message: peddling poison in Iowa will be met with the full force of federal law.
The case was a collaborative effort led by Assistant United States Attorney Dillan Edwards and involved the United States Postal Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and a massive coalition of local law enforcement agencies including the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Santa Ana, California Police Department.
