LAS VEGAS – Federal Judge Gloria Navarro handed down prison sentences this week to four individuals caught slipping back into the U.S. after being kicked out a combined 14 times. The cases, revealed in court records, highlight the revolving door problem facing border enforcement and a blatant disregard for U.S. law.
Three of the defendants are Mexican nationals, and one is from Honduras. Each had already been deported—and repeatedly—but chose to risk re-entry, triggering federal penalties for illegal re-entry, a felony. The names weren’t released, just the fact they all have prior felony convictions adding to the severity of their current offenses.
While the specific details of those prior felonies remain sealed, the sheer number of previous removals is raising questions about the effectiveness of current deportation practices. The sentences, which include periods of supervised release after serving time, are a clear signal from the court that repeated violations won’t be tolerated. This case was prosecuted in the Northern District of Nevada.
