Rochester Robber Mahoney Faces Two Decades Behind Bars

ROCHESTER, NY – Hugh Mahoney, 50, of Rochester, is staring down the barrel of a potential 20-year prison sentence after admitting to robbing the ESL Federal Credit Union on Merchants Road last August. U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced the guilty plea today, marking a significant step towards justice in this brazen daylight heist.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles E. Moynihan, the robbery unfolded on August 22, 2022, when Mahoney walked into the credit union and slapped a demand note on the teller’s counter. The note, chillingly direct, read: “You are being robbed. 100, 50, 20, no dye packs.” The teller, complying with the threat, handed over approximately $3,260 in cash. Mahoney then made a clean getaway – or so he thought.

Responding officers quickly zeroed in on a vehicle carrying Mahoney, spotting a hat and shirt that matched the description broadcast from the scene. While Mahoney claimed the driver of the vehicle was unaware of his criminal intent, it wasn’t enough to distance him from the crime. The evidence, coupled with his own admission, sealed his fate.

“This wasn’t some elaborate scheme,” a source close to the investigation told Grimy Times. “Mahoney walked in, made a demand, and took the money. It was sloppy, desperate, and now he’s paying the price.” The investigation, a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Darren Cox, and the Rochester Police Department, under Chief David Smith, demonstrated a swift and effective response to the robbery.

Mahoney’s guilty plea carries a maximum possible penalty of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. He’ll have plenty of time to contemplate his choices while awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for June 1, 2023, at 9:15 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa. Expect a full report from Grimy Times following the sentencing.

The case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly simple crimes carry significant consequences. Mahoney’s attempt to quickly line his pockets has instead landed him on the path to a lengthy federal prison term. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available.
