Ronga Indicted

A former Lee County deputy sheriff has been indicted on charges of civil rights violations and obstruction of justice. Michael J. Ronga, 43, of Cape Coral, was charged in an indictment unsealed by United States Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III.

The indictment alleges that on May 5, 2013, Ronga assaulted an individual, identified as “R.L.C.”, causing bodily injury. Ronga also allegedly took money and a cellphone from the victim. Furthermore, Ronga lied to law enforcement about his interactions with “R.L.C.” on that day.

If convicted, Ronga faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison for the civil rights charge and up to 20 years in federal prison for the obstruction of justice charge. The case was investigated by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Ronga’s indictment is a significant development in the case, which has been ongoing since the alleged incident in 2013. The fact that Ronga was a deputy sheriff at the time of the alleged crime makes the charges even more disturbing. The indictment sends a clear message that law enforcement officers who abuse their power will be held accountable.

The case will be prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Amira D. Fox and Chief Assistant United States Attorney Jesus M. Casas. An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.

The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of federal and local law enforcement agencies to upholding the law and protecting the rights of all individuals. The fact that Ronga was a sworn law enforcement officer makes his alleged actions even more egregious, and the authorities are right to pursue this case vigorously.

In a statement, United States Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III, announced the unsealing of the indictment, highlighting the importance of holding law enforcement officers accountable for their actions. The community expects law enforcement officers to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and Ronga’s alleged actions fall far short of those expectations.
