Aleksei Volkov, a 32-year-old Russian citizen, has been sentenced to 81 months in prison for his role in assisting major cybercrime groups, including the Yanluowang ransomware group, in carrying out numerous attacks against U.S. companies and other organizations, resulting in tens of millions of dollars in extorted funds.
According to a statement from the Department of Justice, Southern District of Indiana, Volkov was found guilty of conspiring to commit computer fraud and abuse, as well as aiding and abetting the transmission of malicious code, charges that carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
As part of his role in the cybercrime groups, Volkov allegedly provided technical assistance and support to the groups, allowing them to carry out successful attacks against U.S. companies and extort tens of millions of dollars in ransom payments.
