Two California men have been nailed for flooding Florida with deadly heroin and fentanyl. Luis Sandoval, 34, of Los Angeles, and Miguel Sandoval, 35, of Inglewood, were sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan to six years and three months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute a kilogram or more of heroin.
The Sandoval brothers thought they were expanding their drug empire across state lines. Instead, they walked straight into a federal sting. The case traces back to January 2016, when a joint task force of Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) narcotics detectives, DEA agents, and FBI operatives began tracking a major heroin supplier operating out of Jacksonville. That supplier had flown to Los Angeles, picked up a kilogram of heroin, and returned via Greyhound—only to be intercepted and arrested upon arrival. His shipment was seized, and investigators flipped the script.
Using information from the arrested courier, law enforcement contacted the Sandoval brothers directly, posing as buyers in need of a bulk supply. The brothers took the bait, arranging to sell a kilogram of heroin and fentanyl from their base in Inglewood. It was a fatal miscalculation. On April 20, 2016, a coordinated arrest operation brought down both men near Miguel Sandoval’s home. Agents executed a search warrant and recovered more than a kilogram of fentanyl and another full kilogram of heroin—lethal payloads ready for distribution.
Both men eventually pleaded guilty under the weight of the evidence. Miguel Sandoval admitted his role on August 22, 2016. Luis Sandoval followed suit on September 19, 2016. Their admissions confirmed their central role in a cross-country narcotics pipeline feeding the opioid crisis in Florida and beyond.
The investigation was a textbook example of federal-state collaboration. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the FBI pooled resources and intelligence to dismantle a high-capacity drug ring before more poison hit the streets. The seizure not only disrupted supply but also prevented countless overdoses.
Assistant United States Attorney Frank Talbot prosecuted the case, ensuring the Sandoval brothers faced the full consequences of their choices. Their six-year, three-month sentence stands as a warning: no distance, no disguise, and no drug network is beyond the reach of federal justice.
