A Sioux Falls man is going down for a slick $2,500 check scam. Brandon Phillips, 32, cashed the forged check at a local credit union in June 2025.
Phillips’ scheme was simple but effective: get your hands on a forged check for $2,500 and cash it in. The problem was, the check wasn’t legit.
The United States Postal Inspection Service got wind of the scam and launched an investigation. Phillips was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2025.
He pleaded guilty to Bank Fraud on December 15, 2025, and was sentenced to six months in federal prison by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange on March 18, 2026.
Phillips will also serve five years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
