Socialist Saboteur Snared: Treason Charge Laid in Jersey City

It’s a move that’s set tongues wagging in the hallowed halls of New York’s underbelly: the first of the alleged anti-conscription plotters in the state to be charged with treason is none other than Charles Kronenberg, a leading light of Jersey City’s Socialist movement. The 36-year-old was taken into custody in Montclair on Thursday, where he was distributing handbills urging men to ignore the draft on Tuesday, citing the fact that the draft was ‘uncertain’ as his justification.

But the authorities weren’t buying it. Judge Leo Sullivan, presiding over the Jersey City Criminal Court, held Kronenberg for the federal authorities on the charge that he had treasonably obstructed or attempted to obstruct the operation of the law concerning the registration of males between the ages of 21 and 30. The evidence against him? Literature calculated to arouse antagonism and opposition towards the draft.

The authorities weren’t the only ones keeping a close eye on Kronenberg. Three other men – students from Columbia University, no less – were also arrested in Jersey City in connection with the alleged plot. And if that wasn’t enough, a further four prisoners were arraigned in connection with the case.

It’s a move that’s being watched with bated breath by those in the know: will this be the beginning of the end for the anti-conscription movement in New York, or just a minor blip on the radar? Only time will tell. For now, one thing’s for sure: Charles Kronenberg is in a whole heap of trouble.

The authorities are being tight-lipped about the details of the case, but sources close to the investigation suggest that Kronenberg’s actions were just the tip of the iceberg. Whether or not this will lead to a wider crackdown on the anti-conscription movement remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: the gloves are off.

As the country teeters on the brink of war, with the draft looming large over the nation’s collective psyche, the stakes have never been higher. And those who dare to stand in the way of the law? Well, they’re in for a world of trouble.
