Socialist Saboteur Snared: Treason Charge Laid in Jersey City

The 36-year-old was taken into custody in Montclair on Thursday, where he was distributing handbills urging men to ignore the draft on Tuesday, citing the fact that the draft was ‘uncertain’ as his justification.

But the authorities weren’t buying it. Judge Leo Sullivan, presiding over the Jersey City Criminal Court, held Kronenberg for the federal authorities on the charge that he had treasonably obstructed or attempted to obstruct the operation of the law concerning the registration of males between the ages of 21 and 30. The evidence against him? Literature calculated to arouse antagonism and opposition towards the draft.

The authorities weren’t the only ones keeping a close eye on Kronenberg. Three other men – students from Columbia University, no less – were also arrested in Jersey City in connection with the alleged plot. And if that wasn’t enough, a further four prisoners were arraigned in connection with the case.
