SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Philip Bernard Weston, 52, of Ft. Duchesne, Utah, is facing federal second-degree murder charges after a brutal assault on his elderly mother that left her dead. The incident, stemming from a dispute over a vehicle, paints a grim picture of violence within the Uintah County community.
Court documents detail a horrific scene unfolding on or around July 13, 2025. Weston, also known as Philip Bernard Mahpiya-Wicasta, allegedly unleashed a savage beating on his mother inside her home, using only his hands. The attack was so severe that the victim ultimately succumbed to her injuries despite desperate attempts to seek help.
Prior to her death, the victim, who was hearing impaired, utilized social media to reach out to family members for assistance. She sent multiple pleas for help via her tablet to an out-of-state relative. When law enforcement responded to a welfare check, Weston initially claimed his mother was fine. However, officers immediately discovered the victim lying on the floor, surrounded by a disturbing amount of blood.
Inside the residence, investigators found evidence of a violent struggle, with blood splattered across multiple areas. The victim, while still alive, was able to communicate the attack to first responders using American Sign Language. She was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, then airlifted to a Salt Lake City trauma center, but the extent of her injuries—multiple broken ribs, a severe chest injury, broken clavicles, extensive head trauma including a four-inch forehead laceration, eye damage, a scalp hematoma, hemothorax, a collapsed lung, and fractured vertebrae—proved fatal.
Weston is charged with murder in the second degree while within Indian Country. His initial appearance is scheduled for August 20, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in courtroom 8.4 before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City. This case is being spearheaded by the FBI Salt Lake City Field Office, Vernal Resident Agency, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sam Pead and Tanner Zumwalt handling the prosecution.
This investigation is part of Operation Take Back America and Project Safe Neighborhoods, federal initiatives aimed at combating violent crime. However, the brutal details of this case serve as a stark reminder that even with large-scale operations, the most horrific crimes often occur within the confines of a home. An indictment is merely an allegation, and Weston is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
