SIOUX CITY, IA – Shana Mull, 33, of Spencer, Iowa, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 82 months’ imprisonment for her role in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy. The sentence, handed down September 3, 2020, by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand, closes a case that exposed a significant drug pipeline into the Iowa Great Lakes region.
According to court documents, Mull conspired with others between June and August 2019 to distribute over 10 pounds of methamphetamine. While not a major player in the overall operation, Mull was a key distributor of sub-ounce quantities, feeding the street-level demand. The investigation revealed Mull went beyond simple distribution, actively assisting a larger dealer in acquiring the substantial ten-pound meth haul, along with a pound of cocaine.
The case took a dangerous turn in late August 2019 when Mull engaged in reckless attempts to evade law enforcement. Authorities report she twice fled at excessive speeds, causing substantial property damage in the process. The pursuit underscores the disregard for public safety displayed by those involved in this drug trafficking operation. Mull also associated with individuals possessing firearms during the conspiracy, adding another layer of danger to the situation.
The bust culminated in Okoboji, Iowa, where Mull and her boyfriend were found holed up in a self-storage unit. Federal Marshals are currently holding Mull while awaiting transport to a designated federal prison facility. There is no parole in the federal system; Mull will serve the entirety of her 82-month sentence, followed by a 4-year term of supervised release.
Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde prosecuted the case, with a collaborative investigation led by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Okoboji Police Department, Milford Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Spencer Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Criminalistics Investigation. The successful prosecution demonstrates a coordinated effort to dismantle drug networks operating within the state.
