A Springfield man is facing a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to fentanyl and cocaine trafficking charges in federal court.
Christian Caballero, 31, of Springfield, pleaded guilty on May 31, 2024, to one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Caballero was arrested on July 31, 2023, after authorities discovered 501 bags of fentanyl and 10.82 grams of cocaine in his possession. The arrest marks the latest development in a growing trend of fentanyl and cocaine trafficking in western Massachusetts.
U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni has scheduled Caballero’s sentencing for August 1, 2024. The judge will determine the defendant’s sentence based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Chicopee Police Chief Patrick J. Major announced the guilty plea, praising the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd E. Newhouse, who is prosecuting the case.
The charge of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, four years of supervised release and a fine of up to $1 million.
