In a bold move against gun violence, a Vermont man has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison for his role in possessing stolen firearms.
Shane Hardy, 46, of St. Albans, Vermont, was handed down the sentence by United States District Judge Geoffrey W. Crawford on June 20, 2025.
Hardy, who has a serious criminal history, including a conviction for manslaughter in New York State for which he was incarcerated for over a decade, showed a blatant disregard for the law when he accepted four stolen firearms as payment for a drug debt and a quantity of cocaine in October 2023.
Despite knowing that he was prohibited from possessing firearms, Hardy’s actions demonstrate a clear intent to continue his life of crime. The four stolen firearms were later found to be facilitated by Hardy, who carried them into an SUV with New Jersey license plates.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the investigatory efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in bringing Hardy to justice.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the communities they serve.
The Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction strategy, launched in 2021, focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Hardy’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in such reckless and violent behavior. His actions put innocent lives at risk, and it is only fitting that he faces severe punishment for his crimes.
The court records reveal that Hardy’s actions were not taken lightly, and the sentence handed down reflects the severity of his crimes.
The Office of the Federal Public Defender represented Hardy in this case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Arra prosecuted the case.
This case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working to keep our communities safe from the scourge of gun violence.
