Stroudsburg Man Pleads Guilty to Heroin Trafficking

Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania resident James King, 48, admitted today to trafficking heroin on a scale that flooded local streets with up to 2,000 doses of the deadly drug. King pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Wilkes-Barre before Senior Judge A. Richard Caputo, caving under federal charges tied to a major September 2016 bust that uncovered the stash in his vehicle and home.

According to U.S. Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, King possessed approximately 60 grams of heroin—equivalent to two thousand individual street bags—primed for distribution. The seizure, conducted jointly by the DEA and Stroud Area Regional Police Department, cut off a supply line feeding the opioid crisis gripping Pennsylvania’s rural and suburban communities.

The plea deal, negotiated between federal prosecutors and King’s defense, calls for a recommended sentence of 14 years behind bars. While not binding, such agreements carry significant weight with judges. Sentencing is now scheduled for April 17, 2017, leaving King to face the full wrath of federal drug laws in a district that has cracked down hard on narcotics traffickers.

King was indicted by a federal grand jury in Scranton in October 2016, less than a month after the discovery of the heroin. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa, who has built a reputation for dismantling mid-level distribution networks under the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s aggressive Heroin Initiative.

This initiative, launched across the Middle District of Pennsylvania, unites federal, state, and local agencies in a coordinated assault on heroin trafficking. With overdose deaths spiking statewide, authorities have prioritized interdiction, prosecution, and long prison terms to disrupt supply chains and deter would-be dealers.

While the maximum penalty for the offense carries 20 years in prison, a fine, and supervised release, the actual sentence will hinge on federal guidelines and Judge Caputo’s discretion. Factors like criminal history, the nature of the offense, and public safety concerns will weigh heavily. For James King, the cost of his choices may soon be measured in decades behind bars.
