In a chilling reminder of the unpredictable nature of life in the Florida Keys, 20 residents of Big Coppitt Key have enrolled in a Civil Defense Survival course. The five-week program, sponsored by the May Sands P.T.A., kicked off on January 31 at the Big Coppitt Methodist Church. The classes, held every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., will equip participants with the skills to care for themselves and their families in the face of natural disasters, such as hurricanes, or even enemy attack.
