A chilling threat to shoot up a Jewish synagogue in Chicago was made by Timothy Holmes, 31, on March 3, 2026, when he posted on X, a social media platform. The post was in response to a message from the Israeli government’s official X account regarding the death of Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei in Iran. The threat was reported to the FBI National Threat Operation Section, which led to further investigation and the discovery of additional derogatory posts about Jewish people from Holmes’s account.
Holmes’s posts also included the purported address of relatives of an Israeli government official in the United States. The FBI’s investigation led to his arrest in Florida, where he appeared in U.S. District Court and was released on a $100,000 bond despite the government’s objection. The conditions of his release include not possessing firearms, not accessing social media, and limiting his travel to the Northern District of Illinois and the Middle District of Florida.
The charge against Holmes is for making a threat in interstate commerce to injure a person. He will appear in federal court in Chicago on a date to be scheduled. The case was announced by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Andrew S. Boutros and Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI Chicago Field Office Douglas S. DePodesta.
The swift action by law enforcement agencies highlights the seriousness with which such threats are taken and the importance of protecting communities from hate crimes. The case serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and the role of social media platforms in reporting and preventing such threats.
