Texas Man Gets 20 Years for Luring Minor Online

Christopher L. Crawford, a 38-year-old man from Houston, Texas, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for luring a minor online and traveling across state lines to sexually assault her in Sacramento. U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley handed down the sentence today, marking the end of a five-year federal investigation into Crawford’s predatory behavior.

The crime began in March 2017, when Crawford met a teenage girl through an online video game. Posing as a 15-year-old, he initiated text and video chats that quickly turned inappropriate. Over weeks of grooming, he gained the girl’s trust, then arranged to meet her in person—a plan he executed just weeks later.

In April 2017, Crawford traveled from Texas to California, arriving with the sole intent of exploiting the girl. He lured her away from her junior high school campus and sexually assaulted her. The act was not only a gross violation of trust but a federal crime under statutes prohibiting the use of interstate communications to entice minors for illicit purposes.

The investigation was led by the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, a multi-agency unit coordinated by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department. With funding and support from both federal and state authorities, the ICAC focuses on online child exploitation, including pornography, enticement, and sex trafficking. Investigators used digital forensics and communication records to trace Crawford’s movements and build a case that left little room for defense.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rosanne Rust prosecuted the case, emphasizing the calculated nature of Crawford’s deception. “He didn’t just stumble into this crime—he lied, manipulated, and traveled hundreds of miles to hurt a child,” Rust said during sentencing. “This sentence reflects the severity of his actions.”

The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. The program combines federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts to identify, rescue, and protect child victims while bringing predators to justice.
