Thomas J. Leonard Gets 97 Months for Child Porn Distribution

Thomas J. Leonard, 36, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, was sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for distributing sexually explicit images and videos of children, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced today. The sentence, handed down in Trenton federal court, marks the end of a probe into Leonard’s use of peer-to-peer networks to spread child pornography.

Leonard pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Brian R. Martinotti to one count of distributing child pornography, admitted to using the BitTorrent file-sharing platform to both download and distribute graphic material involving minors engaged in sexual acts. The investigation revealed that Leonard operated the operation from his home computer, exploiting digital networks to circulate illegal content across state lines.

Judge Martinotti, presiding over the case, imposed the 97-month sentence and tacked on five years of supervised release following Leonard’s incarceration. A $30,000 fine was also levied — a financial penalty meant to underscore the gravity of the offense and deter future violations.

The FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Timothy Gallagher in Newark, led the investigation, deploying digital forensics to trace Leonard’s activity online. Investigators seized electronic devices and conducted a thorough analysis that confirmed the presence of hundreds of illicit files tied directly to Leonard’s IP address and user activity.

U.S. Attorney Carpenito credited the FBI’s tenacity, as well as the support of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, the N.J. State Police, and the N.J. Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory. Assistant U.S. Attorney Veronica Allende handled the prosecution in the Trenton office’s Criminal Division, pushing for accountability in a case that exploited the most vulnerable.

Anyone with information about potential victims linked to Leonard’s activity is urged to contact the FBI in Newark at 973-792-3000. Defense counsel Rubin M. Sinins Esq. of Springfield, New Jersey, represented Leonard during proceedings.
