Thomas Sentenced to 15 Years

Richard Charles Thomas Jr., 42, of Merced, has been sentenced to 15 years and eight months in prison for possessing with intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine.

According to court documents, the events leading to Thomas’ sentencing began on Aug. 25, 2020, when a law enforcement officer attempted to stop him for a traffic violation. Instead of complying, Thomas accelerated and engaged in a high-speed chase through residential streets of Merced.

During the chase, Thomas reached speeds of 100 miles per hour, drove on the wrong side of the road, sped past stop signs, and tossed a bag out his car’s window. This reckless behavior put the lives of numerous innocent bystanders at risk and demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law.

Law enforcement officers eventually caught Thomas after he abandoned his still-moving car and fled on foot. They also recovered the bag, which contained several thousand dollars in cash and nearly 2 pounds of methamphetamine with 99% purity. The sheer quantity and high purity of the methamphetamine suggest that Thomas was involved in a large-scale distribution operation.

This case was the product of an investigation by the Merced Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The successful prosecution of Thomas was carried out by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kimberly A. Sanchez and Cody S. Chapple. The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston, who imposed a sentence of 15 years and eight months in prison.

The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the significant threat that Thomas posed to the community. The distribution of methamphetamine is a serious crime that can have devastating consequences for individuals and communities. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking and the need for harsh penalties for those involved in such activities.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith announced the sentencing, highlighting the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing Thomas to justice. The successful outcome of this case demonstrates the commitment of federal and local authorities to combating drug trafficking and protecting the public from the harm caused by such crimes.
