Michaela Hekekia, 36, of Topeka, Kan., pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring in the sex trafficking of a minor, admitting she trained a teenage girl to work as a prostitute and transported her across state lines to push her into commercial sex acts, U.S. Attorney Tom Beall announced.
Hekekia admitted in court to driving the minor from Kansas to a motel in Joplin, Mo., where the girl was forced to perform sexual acts for money. She confessed to coaching the victim on how to solicit clients, set prices, and avoid law enforcement — tactics she learned while working as a prostitute herself within the same criminal network.
The operation, based in Topeka, stretched into Missouri and Nebraska, exploiting as many as 20 women and girls at its peak. The ringleaders rented houses to house sex workers and used websites, social media, and burner phones to advertise services and coordinate pickups. The enterprise ran like a calculated business, with roles assigned and profits tracked.
Hekekia started as a prostitute but climbed the ranks, taking on recruiting, training, and ad management duties. She admitted working closely with co-defendants to sustain the trafficking ring, normalizing exploitation under the guise of protection and financial support. The organization preyed on vulnerable women, many of them young and desperate.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 20. Prosecutors have agreed to recommend no more than 70 months in federal prison, though the final decision rests with the court. The plea marks a key victory in dismantling a regional trafficking network rooted in the heartland.
Co-defendant Frank Boswell, 42, Topeka, Kan., is set for trial March 7. Rachel Flenniken, 34, Topeka, Kan., and Sean P. Hall, 47, Topeka, Kan., await sentencing. Shannon Nelson, 23, Topeka, Kan., is scheduled for sentencing January 23. The FBI, Topeka Police, Homeland Security Investigations, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Kenney led the investigation. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
