Toys R Us Theft: Postal Worker Indicted

PITTSBURGH, PA – A Tarentum woman who held a position of public trust is now facing federal charges after allegedly pilfering a $75 Toys R Us gift card from the mail. Julie L. Bowser, 47, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh this week, Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song announced.

The one-count indictment accuses Bowser of theft of mail by a postal employee – a betrayal of the very system she was sworn to uphold. Sources close to the investigation tell Grimy Times the stolen gift card was part of a larger mailing, raising questions about whether this was an isolated incident or part of a larger pattern of misconduct. The USPS – Office of Inspector General launched the investigation that led to the indictment.

Bowser was employed by the United States Postal Service at the time of the alleged theft. While the amount stolen may seem small, federal prosecutors are taking a hard line on breaches of trust within the postal service, particularly given the increasing number of package thefts reported nationwide. The indictment doesn’t detail how the theft was discovered, only that it occurred.

If convicted, Bowser faces a maximum total sentence of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both. However, the actual sentence will be determined by the seriousness of the offense and any prior criminal history. Federal Sentencing Guidelines will be a key factor in the judge’s decision.

Assistant United States Attorney Adam N. Hallowell is leading the prosecution for the government. He’ll be tasked with proving beyond a reasonable doubt that Bowser intentionally stole the gift card. Defense counsel has yet to be officially named in court records.

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. Julie L. Bowser is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available, shedding light on the dark corners of federal crime in Pennsylvania and beyond.
