A brazen bank heist unfolded in the mailroom of the US Postal Service in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Nicholas Pecko, 33, allegedly swiped two checks worth $6,581.59, meant for delivery to their rightful recipients.
Pecko, a US Postal Service employee, is accused of altering the checks to make it look like he was the intended payee. The scheme allowed him to deposit the funds into his own account.
According to federal prosecutors, the checks were sent through the mail and were supposed to be delivered by the US Postal Service. But instead, Pecko allegedly pocketed the cash and committed bank fraud.
The US Postal Service Office of Inspector General investigated the case, and Assistant US Attorney Sarah Lloyd is prosecuting the matter.
Pecko faces up to 35 years in prison, a fine, and supervised release following his imprisonment. He’s presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
