Utah’s crime landscape in 2017 was marked by a disturbing trend: a steady increase in violent crime rates.
According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, which collects and analyzes crime data from law enforcement agencies across the United States, Utah experienced a 10.8% rise in violent crime between 2015 and 2017. This uptick in violence came as the nation grappled with an opioid epidemic, which would claim thousands of lives in Utah alone that year.
The FBI UCR program, which has been tracking crime trends since the 1930s, reported that in 2017, an estimated 1,124.6 violent crimes occurred per 100,000 inhabitants in Utah. This represented a slight increase from 2016, when the rate stood at 1,017.9 per 100,000. Nationally, the violent crime rate rose by 3.4% between 2015 and 2017, with a total of 380.6 violent crimes reported per 100,000 inhabitants.
Utah’s law enforcement agencies attributed the increase in violent crime to the growing presence of heroin and fentanyl in the state, as well as the rise of gang activity. The opioid crisis, which was fueled by the overprescription of painkillers and the proliferation of synthetic opioids, left a trail of destruction in its wake, with many users turning to crime to fund their habits.
In the midst of this chaos, property crime rates in Utah also saw a slight increase, with an estimated 2,444.1 property crimes reported per 100,000 inhabitants in 2017. This marked a 2.5% rise from 2016, when the rate stood at 2,378.3 per 100,000. Theft, burglary, and motor vehicle theft were among the most common property crimes reported in Utah that year.
As law enforcement agencies in Utah grappled with the complexities of the opioid crisis and its impact on crime rates, the state’s residents were left to wonder what lay ahead. With the nation’s crime landscape continuing to shift and evolve, one thing was clear: the need for effective solutions to combat the root causes of crime had never been more pressing.
