Utah is reeling from the latest blow to its already embattled war on drugs. A massive meth and fentanyl bust has left authorities stunned, with a convicted felon at the center of the operation.
Anthony Owen Pawley, 65, of Murray, Utah, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City today for multiple federal crimes. According to court documents, Pawley was pulled over by detectives from the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team on May 9, 2024, for a traffic violation.
During the traffic stop, a canine officer alerted to narcotics, and a subsequent search of the vehicle turned up five pounds of suspected methamphetamine and several hundred blue pressed pills suspected to contain fentanyl. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Further investigation revealed approximately 40 pounds of field-tested and confirmed methamphetamine, 15,000 fentanyl pills, and two firearms at Pawley’s residence and a storage unit in Murray associated with him.
The sheer scale of the operation is staggering. Authorities estimate the street value of the seized methamphetamine to be in the millions. The fentanyl pills alone would have been enough to kill thousands of people. It’s a stark reminder of the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic on our communities.
Pawley is charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of fentanyl with the intent to distribute, and felon in possession of a firearm. His initial court appearance is scheduled for May 24, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.
The case is being investigated by the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Cameron P. Warner of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah is prosecuting the case. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities.
As authorities continue to comb through the evidence, one thing is clear: the war on drugs is far from over. And it’s up to us to demand action from our leaders to address the root causes of this crisis. The people of Utah deserve better than to live in fear of overdose and violence. It’s time for real change.
Anthony Owen Pawley, 65, of Murray, Utah, is a convicted felon with a long history of run-ins with the law. His indictment on multiple federal charges marks the latest chapter in a long and troubled career.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But one thing is certain: the people of Utah will be watching this case closely, and demanding justice for the victims of Pawley’s alleged crimes.
