PROVIDENCE, RI – A violent struggle with federal law enforcement landed Cristian Aroldo Pineda Diaz, 37, back in custody, facing new federal charges after already awaiting trial on serious domestic violence allegations. Diaz, a Guatemalan national who slipped into the U.S. in 2006, allegedly tackled a DEA agent on July 15, 2025, seriously injuring the agent as officers attempted to execute an immigration arrest warrant.
According to court documents, the incident unfolded as ICE Enforcement and Removal officers, a DEA agent, and a Deputy U.S. Marshal approached Diaz. Rather than comply, Diaz launched into a physical assault, tackling the DEA agent and initiating a chaotic scuffle. The struggle didn’t stop there. Diaz continued to resist as the officers worked to subdue him, resulting in injuries to both an immigration officer and another DEA agent – both requiring medical attention. This wasn’t a simple arrest gone wrong; it was a calculated act of aggression against those sworn to uphold the law.
This latest incident is far from an isolated event. Diaz’s rap sheet in Rhode Island is already brimming with accusations. On February 5, 2023, he was arrested in Central Falls on charges of domestic breaking and entering, domestic disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. A no-contact order was swiftly issued, attempting to protect a complainant from further harassment. But Diaz allegedly ignored the order, allegedly texting and calling the complainant just days later. The situation escalated further when he allegedly followed the complainant’s car, repeatedly ramming his own vehicle into theirs.
These actions led to a fresh arrest warrant on February 16, 2023, charging Diaz with six counts of felony domestic assault and violation of a protective order. He was initially detained at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI), but released on bail on April 3, 2023 – a decision now under scrutiny given his alleged attack on federal agents. The cycle of violence and disregard for the law appears to have continued unchecked, culminating in the recent assault.
Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced Diaz is now in federal custody, charged with assault, resisting, and impeding a federal law enforcement officer in performance of official duties. Assistant U.S. Attorney G. Michael Seaman is prosecuting the federal case. The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Federal officials state this case falls under “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative designed to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from violent crime. The operation leverages resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood. However, critics will undoubtedly question whether existing systems allowed a known violent offender to remain free and pose a threat to law enforcement. A criminal complaint is merely an accusation, and Diaz is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
