Wanblee Woman Nabbed for SSI Scam

RAPID CITY, SD – A South Dakota woman is facing the consequences after a federal judge discovered she was pocketing money meant for her disabled child. Talana Francine Standing Bear, also known as Talana Francine Sitting Up, 40, of Wanblee, was sentenced on January 30, 2023, after pleading guilty to making false statements.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken handed down a sentence of time already served, followed by two years of supervised release. But the punishment doesn’t stop there. Standing Bear was also ordered to shell out $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and a hefty $14,241.65 in restitution – money she stole from a system designed to help those most in need.

The scheme, uncovered by the Office of the Inspector General – Social Security Administration, revolved around falsified documentation relating to her minor child’s Social Security disability income. A federal grand jury indicted Standing Bear in February 2021, and she finally admitted guilt on July 20, 2022. The investigation revealed a cold calculation to exploit the system.

According to court documents, Standing Bear illegally received $13,695.65 in Title XVI Supplemental Security Income and an additional $546 through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Instead of using these funds for the well-being of her child, as intended, she diverted them for her own personal benefit. It’s a betrayal of trust and a slap in the face to legitimate recipients.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Sazama skillfully prosecuted the case, building a solid argument that exposed Standing Bear’s deceit. While the sentence may seem lenient to some, the restitution order forces her to repay the stolen funds. This case serves as a stark warning: defrauding federal programs carries serious consequences, even in rural communities like Wanblee.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about a vulnerable child who was deprived of resources they rightfully deserved. And it’s a reminder that even seemingly small-scale fraud can have a devastating impact on real people.
