Worcester Man Faces Re-Entry Rap After Deportation

WORCESTER, MA – Oscar Conrado Ureiro Romero, 23, is facing federal charges after allegedly violating deportation orders and re-entering the United States illegally. The Mexican national was charged in federal court yesterday and is currently being held without bail, pending indictment.

The case began to unfold on March 27, 2017, when Romero was arrested by the Massachusetts State Police in Holden. The initial charge? Operating under the influence. But the traffic stop quickly revealed a more serious issue: Romero had already been deported. He didn’t stay gone.

Federal prosecutors are now moving forward with a charge of illegal re-entry. If convicted, Romero faces a maximum sentence of two years behind bars, followed by one year of supervised release. A hefty $250,000 fine is also on the table. And, naturally, another deportation order will be issued upon completion of any sentence.

“This case underscores our commitment to enforcing immigration laws and securing our borders,” stated Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb in a press release. Matthew J. Etre, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston, and Colonel Richard D. McKeon, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, joined in the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark J. Grady is handling the prosecution from Weinreb’s Worcester Branch Office.

The feds are quick to point out that the charges are merely allegations at this point. Romero is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. But the wheels of the justice system are turning, and Romero’s future hangs in the balance. He’s already tasted deportation once – this time, the consequences could be even more severe.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments. The relentless pursuit of those who flout the law continues, one arrest at a time. Expect more details as they become available.
