Wyoming 2018: Crime on the Range

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program paints a picture of crime in Wyoming for 2018, a year marked by a decline in violent crime nationwide. According to the UCR, the Cowboy State saw a 5% decrease in overall crime rates, with law enforcement agencies submitting over 99% of their crimes to the FBI.

However, Wyoming’s low population density and rural landscape make it an outlier in terms of crime rates. With a rate of 1,964.1 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, Wyoming ranked 15th among the 50 states. This is in contrast to the national average of 3,450.5 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, which saw a 3.4% decrease from the previous year. The UCR data also highlights the prevalence of property crimes in Wyoming, with larceny-theft being the most common offense. Across the country, property crimes accounted for 85% of all reported offenses, with burglaries and motor vehicle thefts dominating the landscape. The opioid epidemic, which was in full swing in 2018, contributed to a rise in property crimes, as individuals resorted to theft to fund their addiction.

In terms of violent crime, Wyoming saw a slight increase in aggravated assault rates, which rose by 2.6% from 2017. This trend was consistent with national patterns, as cities across the country grappled with the consequences of the opioid crisis. However, Wyoming’s rate of 141.1 aggravated assaults per 100,000 inhabitants remained lower than the national average of 245.8.
