Yemeni National Jailed for Border Run

ALBANY, NY – Abdulmagid Al Saadi, a 38-year-old citizen of Yemen, is behind bars after being sentenced to 10 days in jail for a brazen attempt to illegally enter the United States. The sentence was handed down today following Al Saadi’s guilty plea to the misdemeanor charge.

The case, announced by U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent John C. Pfeifer, details a calculated, if unsuccessful, border run. On February 16, 2017, Al Saadi reportedly crossed the US-Canada border roughly half a mile west of Rouses Point, New York, directly onto New York State Route 276. He then continued south on foot, believing he could evade detection.

He didn’t. Agents from the United States Border Patrol quickly intercepted Al Saadi, bringing an end to his attempt to bypass legal entry procedures. The incident highlights the constant vigilance required by border officials to secure the northern frontier, a region often overshadowed by concerns about the southern border.

The prosecution, handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan, moved swiftly, securing the guilty plea and a tangible sentence. While a mere 10 days, the jail time sends a clear message: attempting to circumvent immigration laws carries consequences. This isn’t a victimless crime; it strains resources and undermines the legal immigration system.

But the jail sentence is only the first step. Upon completion of his 10-day term, Al Saadi will be turned over to the Department of Homeland Security for removal proceedings. He will almost certainly be deported back to Yemen, facing the repercussions of his illegal entry attempt. The case was investigated by the Border Patrol’s Champlain Station.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and others like it, exposing the underbelly of federal crime and holding those who break the law accountable. The constant flow of illegal crossings, no matter the origin, remains a significant challenge for law enforcement along the nation’s borders.
