Zambrano Sentenced

Joe J. Zambrano, 55, of Albuquerque, N.M., has been sentenced to six months in prison for his conviction on a misdemeanor charge of assaulting, resisting and impeding a federal officer in the performance of their official duties.

Zambrano was sentenced today in federal court in Santa Fe, N.M., and will also serve one year of supervised release following his prison term. The sentence comes after Zambrano pleaded guilty to the charge on March 1, 2017.

According to the criminal complaint, Zambrano attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon against Park Rangers of the National Park Service during a routine traffic stop within the Petroglyph National Monument on Jan. 15, 2017. Zambrano then provided a false name, birthdate and social security number to the Park Rangers in response to their request for Zambrano’s identification information.

The incident occurred when Zambrano nearly struck a Park Ranger with his vehicle while attempting to flee from two Park Rangers. Zambrano ignored the Park Rangers’ verbal commands that he stop his vehicle, leading to the charge of assaulting, resisting and impeding a federal officer.

Zambrano was charged by a misdemeanor information on Jan. 18, 2017, and admitted to the crime in his guilty plea. The case was investigated by the National Park Service and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eva Fontanez.

The sentence of six months in prison followed by one year of supervised release reflects the seriousness of the crime committed by Zambrano. Assaulting a federal officer is a serious offense that can have significant consequences, as seen in this case.
