Brooklyn streets bled gunfire all summer — now federal prosecutors are slamming the hammer down. Ten convicted felons were charged in a single week with illegally possessing firearms during two days in early August, the Department of Justice announced. Each man already had a rap sheet long enough to land them in prison — yet they were found with loaded weapons on Brooklyn streets and inside homes, cars, and even draped around their necks.
Dashawn Andrews was caught with a .22LR Taurus pistol on Livonia Avenue. Paolo Alfaro Barber walked openly with a loaded .38 revolver tucked in a bag hanging from his neck — cops spotted the telltale L-shaped bulge on Newkirk Avenue. Terrence Brown had a 9mm Taurus stashed in his Blake Avenue apartment. Jahquel Giddeon hid a loaded Ruger 380 under his mattress on Rockaway Parkway. All were indicted on August 6.
Some were pulled over for routine traffic stops — and turned up armed. Macye McCall was a passenger in a Range Rover driving the wrong way down Sutter Avenue when cops found a .38 Special revolver on him. Avery Millington was caught weaving the wrong way on Bristol Street — cops found a loaded Charter Arms .38 Special. Aaron Swaby was riding in a car stopped on Surf Avenue when a loaded .40-caliber Smith & Wesson was discovered inside.
Others were found behind the wheel — and under the influence. Tony McQueen was passed out drunk in a vehicle at Atlantic and Boyland, a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson on him. Marvin Pickett crashed into a Citibike stand at Nassau and Navy Streets while driving drunk months earlier — the .380 Taurus he had that night finally caught up with him in an August indictment. Keenen Nurse didn’t even have the gun on him — it was hidden under a stairwell on Eastern Parkway. His DNA sealed the case.
Acting U.S. Attorney Seth D. DuCharme didn’t mince words: “The one tried and true way to reduce the rapid spike in gun violence we’ve experienced in Brooklyn this summer is to take the guns out of the hands of repeat offenders and take those offenders off of our streets.” He credited NYPD, FBI-NYPD Metro Safe Streets Task Force, and New York State Parole for the coordinated sweep.
The arrests are part of Project Safe Neighborhoods — a federal initiative targeting violent crime hotspots through aggressive prosecution of firearm offenses. These 10 cases show the strategy in action: no warnings, no second chances. Possess a gun as a felon, and federal time awaits. The message is clear — Brooklyn’s streets aren’t yours to terrorize.
