A 19-year-old South Dakota man has been indicted for allegedly assaulting and resisting multiple law enforcement officers on the Rosebud Sioux Tribe reservation.
According to court documents, Dayvon Sanchez, 19, was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 14, 2018, for two counts of Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on November 19, 2017. Sanchez allegedly physically resisted and forcibly kicked multiple Rosebud Sioux Tribe law enforcement officers, sparking a violent confrontation.
A grand jury has now indicted Sanchez on the charges, which carry a maximum penalty of up to 8 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine. The charges also include three years of supervised release and a $100 contribution to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Sanchez appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 12, 2018, and pled not guilty to the charges. The investigation is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson handling the case.
Sanchez has been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has yet to be set. The charges against Sanchez are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Sanchez’s alleged actions raise serious concerns about public safety and the welfare of law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect their communities.
