20-Year-Old Carjacker Marcus Burton Sentenced to Nine Years

MEMPHIS, TN – Marcus Burton, 20, was handed a nine-year federal prison sentence for carjacking and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime. The grim announcement came from Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph C. Murphy Jr.

The incident unfolded on November 15, 2020, when officers from the Memphis Police Department responded to a report of a carjacking at Western Park Drive and Deerland Street. According to court documents, Burton confronted a victim with a silver handgun, demanding all his belongings before making off with a brown 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350.

Several hours later, the stolen vehicle was recovered unoccupied by Memphis Police. The victim identified Burton as the culprit on November 17, 2020.

Burton pleaded guilty to the charges on August 20, 2021. On November 22, 2021, U.S. District Judge Sheryl L. Lipman sentenced him to 117 months imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release. Parole does not exist in the federal system.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Memphis Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wendy K. Cornejo and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel D. Winnig prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
