NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Last Tuesday brought the grim reality of yet another gun crime to Nashville as Gievanne Courtlyn Ashley, 21, was slammed with two counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, according to U.S. Attorney Don Cochran for the Middle District of Tennessee.
The charges are rooted in an incident that unfolded on August 20th on Westchester Drive, where a teenager was brutally shot in the abdomen with an AR-style rifle. Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) officers arrived at the scene and immediately zeroed in on Ashley as the shooter, who promptly fled.
Little did they know that Ashley was already wanted for a probation violation warrant. It took MNPD until August 24th to track down Ashley, who was found hiding in a bedroom closet of a Herman Street residence. During the raid, officers discovered a loaded .40 caliber Glock under a living room chair cushion.
With further interviews, MNPD secured a search warrant for an Alameda Street apartment and uncovered an arsenal: a .32 caliber Long revolver; a Ruger AR-5.56 mm rifle with 30 rounds in the magazine; additional magazines; and more ammunition rounds.
Ashley already has two felony convictions on his record in Davidson County, including burglary of a motor vehicle and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted of these new charges, Ashley could be looking at up to ten years in prison for each count.
This harrowing case was investigated by MNPD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Notaristefano handling the prosecution. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
