FRANKFORT, Ky. – A Georgetown man has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for producing child pornography and threatening the young victims.
The investigation revealed that Lawson produced and possessed sexually explicit images of two young girls, Victim 1 and Victim 2, as well as cartoon and computer-generated images of the sexual abuse of children. Court documents outlined that the sexually explicit pictures existed within a larger pattern of sexual abuse perpetrated by Lawson, starting when Victim 1 was just five years old.
According to Victim 1’s testimony, Lawson threatened to harm her if she told anyone about the abuse. The pictures found on Lawson’s phone corroborated Victim 1’s reports, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction. Lawson pleaded guilty to producing and possessing child pornography, admitting that he knowingly captured visual depictions of one of the girls and intended to create depictions of sexually explicit conduct.
“This case demonstrates what many in law enforcement know: consumption and production of child pornography often exists side-by-side with physical child sexual abuse,” said Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. “This correlation is one of many reasons why enforcement in this area is so critically important. The defendant’s conduct was egregious and appalling, and it certainly warrants the punishment he received.”
The investigation was conducted by the FBI and Georgetown Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Melton prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States. The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted this case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Lawson’s sentence serves as a warning to those engaging in the production of child sexual abuse material, that such conduct gives rise to substantial prison sentences. This case is a grim reminder of the devastating impact of child sex crimes and the importance of continued enforcement efforts to protect our children.
