$3B Recovered in Health Fraud Crackdown

Washington, D.C. – The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) has made headlines with its Spring 2024 Semiannual Report, revealing nearly $3 billion in expected recoveries from health fraud. This significant amount includes misspent Medicare and Medicaid funds, a stark reminder of the financial impact of fraudulent activities within the healthcare system.

Over the reporting period from October 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, HHS-OIG conducted audits and investigations that led to over $2.76 billion in expected recoveries. The agency reported 712 criminal and civil enforcement actions against individuals and entities suspected of committing fraud against HHS programs.

Among the notable actions, HHS-OIG excluded 1,795 individuals and entities from participating in federal healthcare programs. This proactive approach not only recoups funds but also deters potential future fraudulent activities.

The report highlights key challenges faced by the Department of Health and Human Services, including safeguarding public health and ensuring the financial integrity of HHS programs. It specifically points out the low percentage of Medicare enrollees receiving medication for their opioid use disorder, emphasizing the need for better access to treatment.

States are also facing challenges in meeting third-party liability requirements for Medicaid programs, a situation that OIG has recommended CMS address through an action plan. The report underscores the ongoing efforts to modernize and streamline reporting requirements, making the process more concise and focused.

This latest report from HHS-OIG serves as a testament to the agency’s commitment to fighting healthcare fraud and protecting taxpayers. With billions at stake, the fight against health fraud remains a priority for the agency as it continues its oversight work to ensure the integrity of our healthcare system.
