$4B Saved from Fraudulent Health Fund: OIG’s Work Unveiled

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) has been on a roll, recovering almost $4 billion from fraudulent Medicare, Medicaid, and other health funds. The new Fall 2022 Semiannual Report to Congress details the agency’s success in battling fraud during the last half of fiscal year 2022.

In the report, OIG Inspector General Christi A. Grimm takes pride in the agency’s relentless dedication and data-driven oversight, which has resulted in significant recoveries and improvements across various HHS programs. ‘Our efforts during the reporting period – including recommendations to improve nursing home life safety and emergency preparedness, recovery of over a billion dollars in taxpayer funds, and the exclusion of 1,290 individuals and entities from participating in Federal health care programs – resonate throughout all of HHS,’ Grimm stated.

The report also highlights the impact of OIG’s work for the entire fiscal year 2022. It projects nearly $4 billion in expected recoveries from audits and investigations conducted between October 1, 2021, and September 30, 2022. Over $1 billion is expected to be returned based on program audit findings, with approximately $3 billion from investigative work.

Seven hundred ten criminal enforcement actions were taken against individuals or entities that engaged in crimes affecting HHS programs. Additionally, 736 civil actions were reported, which included false claims and unjust-enrichment lawsuits, civil monetary penalty settlements, and administrative recoveries related to provider self-disclosure matters. OIG also excluded 2,332 individuals and entities from participating in Federal health care programs.

One notable finding was the identification of 1,714 providers with high-risk billing for telehealth services during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings underscore the importance of strong oversight in telehealth services to prevent fraud and ensure proper use of funds.

The OIG’s work has not only recovered billions but also improved the integrity of health care programs, ensuring that taxpayers’ money is spent wisely and efficiently.
