A 70-year-old man from Isleta Pueblo has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in a child sex abuse case. Patrick Carpio was convicted of abusing two young Native American children, one of whom was just 10 years old at the time of the abuse.
Carpio was arrested in 2015 and charged with four counts of child sex abuse. He eventually pleaded guilty to two of the counts, admitting to sexually abusing a 10-year-old child in 2002 and a 12-year-old child in 2013. The abuse occurred on the Isleta Pueblo reservation in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.
The case was investigated by the Southern Pueblos Agency of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Mease prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating child sex abuse and exploitation.
Carpio will be required to register as a sex offender after completing his prison sentence. The sentence is a significant blow to the Isleta Pueblo community, which has been working to address the issue of child sex abuse.
The case highlights the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes, particularly when it comes to vulnerable populations like children. It also underscores the need for continued support and resources for communities affected by child sex abuse.
The 20-year sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors who work tirelessly to bring justice to victims of child sex abuse. It is a reminder that no one is above the law, and that those who commit such heinous crimes will be held accountable.
Project Safe Childhood is a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sex exploitation and abuse. The program marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
