250 New Immigrant Cases Hit Texas U.S. Attys’ Office

Federal prosecutors in the Western District of Texas have been hard at work, charging 251 defendants with immigration and immigration-related crimes over a single week. From March 13 to March 19, these new cases brought the total number of immigration-related charges in the district to an alarming 250.

Among the accused are individuals from various backgrounds, including undocumented immigrants charged with crossing into the United States without authorization. The defendants face a range of charges, from illegal entry and re-entry to human smuggling and harboring aliens.

The feds have named several key figures in this sweep. One defendant, Juan Carlos Mejia, 35, from El Paso, Texas, is accused of conspiracy to transport aliens for profit. Mejia is alleged to have facilitated the transportation of immigrants across state lines, charging exorbitant fees for his services.

In another case, Maria Elena Rodriguez, 27, of San Antonio, Texas, was charged with harboring aliens after she allegedly provided shelter and assistance to an illegal immigrant in her home. Rodriguez faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

Among the most disturbing cases is that of Carlos Garza, a 40-year-old man from Laredo, Texas, who stands accused of conspiracy to commit human trafficking. Authorities claim that Garza used his position as a bus driver to transport immigrants across state lines, exploiting their vulnerability for personal gain.

These latest charges underscore the relentless effort by federal prosecutors in Texas to combat illegal immigration and related crimes. As these cases move forward, the public can expect a tough stance from the feds against those who undermine the integrity of our nation’s immigration system.
