Christmas Inferno: Family’s Farewell Celebration Turns to Tragedy

On the eve of Christmas Day, Monday, December 29, 1924, a festive family scene at 2125 Queen Anne Avenue turned into a nightmarish inferno. Mirs Mabel Chidester, a devoted mother, suffered severe burns to her face and body while attempting to salvage a flaming Christmas decoration from their home. The fire, which had been sparked by a faulty lighting system, ravaged the Chidester residence, causing $1,100 in damages to the building and its contents. The family had been hosting a farewell Christmas celebration, and the tragic events marked the end of their holiday cheer. Christmas lights, once a symbol of joy and togetherness, had become a deadly hazard. Fire Marshal Robert T. Fasing issued a stern warning to Seattle residents, cautioning them to be vigilant and keep a safe distance from candles, lights, and other flammable decorations.
