James Johnson, Healthcare Fraud, Illinois 2022

PORTLAND, Ore. — In a shocking case of betrayal, a U.S. Air Force Veteran with a 100% disability rating was swindled out of his contracted healthcare provider by a company citing ‘safety concerns.’

Michael Williamson, a Springfield, Oregon veteran, was informed by his contracted provider late last year that they would be discontinuing his in-home care after a 90-day notice. This left Williamson with a life-threatening decision: find a new provider or risk losing the care he desperately needed.

But Williamson refused to back down. He filed suit against the VA and his contracted provider, prompting a joint investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the VA.

According to sources close to the case, the investigation revealed that the contracted provider had been prioritizing profits over patient care, leaving Williamson in a precarious situation. The VA quickly moved to rectify the situation, working collaboratively with Williamson and his attorneys from Disability Rights Oregon to find a new provider that could meet his high level of care needs.

‘We are pleased to announce that the VA and Mr. Williamson have reached a joint agreement to dismiss this case,’ said Billy J. Williams, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon. ‘The parties have worked hard to reach consensus on this matter. He is an honored veteran and deserving of thoughtful and attentive care.’

‘I’m pleased we were able to achieve a successful outcome that honored our veteran and his family’s wishes while also providing a safe environment for his care,’ said David Whitmer, Interim Medical Center Director, Roseburg VA Healthcare System. ‘Because of the complex care needed by an ALS patient, this took some time to negotiate and ensure a home based solution that could meet all of the requirements.’

Williamson’s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing patient care over profits. It is a testament to the bravery and determination of Williamson that he refused to give up, fighting for the care that he so desperately needed.

The case has left many in the community shaken, and raises questions about the VA’s process for selecting and contracting with healthcare providers. As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: Williamson’s story will not be forgotten.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the VA have pledged to continue their work in ensuring that veterans like Williamson receive the care they deserve. But for Williamson, the fight is far from over. He will continue to fight for justice, and for the rights of vulnerable veterans who are often taken advantage of by those who are supposed to help them.
